Bean Harvest

September 10th, 2012

We helped Brenda's mom with her bean harvest.  Her garden is far away from where she lives and the rain was threatening to ruin her beans so she asked us to help.  She had picked many of them and they were piled in an old hut with the roof caving in.  They were getting wet and needed to be out of there.
We stuffed them in sacks and then carried them to the pickup.  Usually she has to carry them all to her home, one at a time,  and that is about 3 miles away from her garden.

Putting the beans in the sacks.

The maize in Juliet's garden.

This is how Juliet carries her bags of beans.

Loading the beans in the truck.

Juliet was showing us the boundaries to her garden.  It was her father's land.

The neighboring compound to Juliet's garden.  They were very friendly.

The children were excited to have visitors.

They love having their pictures taken.

This is how Robert carried the beans.

Aren't they beautiful.

Everyone has to help carry water in geri-cans.

Nine big bags of beans to take to Juliet's house to lay out in the sun to dry and then shell.

The grandma who lived in the compound.  She speaks no English but she talked to us anyway.

A little house for their pigeons.

The children helped us pick more beans.

We took some home and dried them and shelled them and cooked them.  They were good!

The grandfather of the compound.  He greeted us in Acholi.  He was so happy to see us.
